Actual passwords have been redacted.
Government email addresses and passwords were isolated by rogue members of the group Anonymous and 4Chan and published in a private Google Documents-like file on the Internet earlier this week. The addresses and passwords were obtained from a server hosted by Gawker.com, which had been under surveillance by the group since June.
The group targeted Gawker after the website wrote a series of articles about users who patrolled the website 4Chan. In retaliation to the articles, 4Chan and Anonymous members banded together to infiltrate the servers of Gawker, which led to the collection of 1.5 million user names, email addresses and passwords. A small percentage of those usernames belonged to accounts within government agencies.
The usernames and passwords were published via a torrent on Sunday.
